iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: Une Femme Amoureuse

Artist: Talina et Soumia

A french version of the original Woman in Love composed by the Bee Gees and sang by Barbra Streisand.

Lyrics:

Le temps qui court comme un fou

Aujourd’hui voilà qu’il s’arrête sur nous

Tu me regardes et qui sait si tu me vois

Mais moi je ne vois que toi

Je n’ai plus qu’une question

Tes yeux mes yeux

Et je chante ton nom

Si quelqu’un d’autre venait

Je l’éloignerais et je me défendrais

{Refrain:}

Je suis une femme amoureuse

Et je brûle d’envie de dresser autour de toi

Les murs de ma vie

C’est mon droit de t’aimer

Et de vouloir te garder

Par dessus tout

Hier aujourd’hui demain

Comptent un seul jour quand tu prends ma main

C’est comme un plan fabuleux tracé là-haut

Pour l’amour de nous deux

Qu’on soit ensemble longtemps

Ou séparés par des océans

Si un danger survenait

Je l’éloignerais et je me défendrais

{au Refrain}

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 346 - The song you think you have played over and over and over the most in your life

Tears in Heaven - Eric Claptonp

Can it be played… in the guitar? =D

Clapton wrote this about his 4-year-old son Conor, who died when he fell out of a 53rd floor window in the apartment where his mother was staying in New York City. Clapton had one other child at the time: His daughter Ruth was born in 1987, the year after Conor was born.
Clapton wrote this with Will Jennings, who has written many famous songs from movies, including “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer And A Gentleman and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic. Jennings wrote the lyrics to many of Steve Winwood’s hits and has also written with B.B. King, Roy Orbison, The Crusaders, Peter Wolf and many others. He told us:
“Eric and I were engaged to write a song for a movie called Rush. We wrote a song called ‘Help Me Up’ for the end of the movie… then Eric saw another place in the movie for a song and he said to me, ‘I want to write a song about my boy.’ Eric had the first verse of the song written, which, to me, is all the song, but he wanted me to write the rest of the verse lines and the release (‘Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees…’), even though I told him that it was so personal he should write everything himself. He told me that he had admired the work I did with Steve Winwood and finally there was nothing else but do to as he requested, despite the sensitivity of the subject. This is a song so personal and so sad that it is unique in my experience of writing songs.”
Clapton knew of Jennings from his work with Steve Winwood. Says Jennings: “Eric and Steve go back, they made that one record together years ago (with Blind Faith), and Eric followed all our writing from Arc Of A Diver, because he always kept up with Steve. We wrote an album called Talking Back To The Night that Steve and I did, and then the third album we wrote was the Back In The High Life album. So Eric knew about that, and he knew about the Crusaders things and the B.B. King things. He had said he always wanted to get together and write, so he called me for the film. Russ Titelman, who had produced the Back In The High Life album, was involved in the film, and that was the other connection.”
Jennings revised the lyrics as Clapton and his band worked on it in the studio. They had no idea it would be a huge hit. Says Jennings, “It was furthest through from my mind, really. I was so involved in the sensitivity of the subject, and I didn’t even think about that. I’m passionate about all the songs I write, but it was just in another place entirely, another category.”
Conor’s mother is actress Lory Del Santo. She and Clapton began dating while he was going through a divorce with his wife Pattie.
After Conor’s death, Clapton appeared in Public Service Announcements urging parents to put up gates to keep their children away from danger.
This won Grammys in 1993 for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal. Clapton was nominated for 9 Grammys that year and won 6.
Clapton played an acoustic version on his 1992 MTV Unplugged special. The performance was made into a very successful album, featuring acoustic versions of “Layla” and “Before You Accuse Me.” The acoustic version was used a the B-side of the acoustic “Layla” single in 1992.
Clapton’s 1986 album August is named for the month Conor was born.
In March 2004, Eric stopped playing this and “My Father’s Eyes” in concert. While touring Japan in November and December 2003, he discovered he could no longer perform them. Said Clapton: “I didn’t feel the loss anymore, which is so much a part of performing those songs. I really have to connect with he feelings that were there when I wrote them. They’re kind of gone and I really don’t want them to come back, particularly. My life is different now. They probably just need a rest and maybe I’ll introduce them for a much more detached point of view.”  (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I’ll find my way
Through night and day,
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There’s peace I’m sure,
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Say It Ain’t So - Weezer

his song is about lead singer Rivers Cuomo’s alcoholic step-dad, and how every time he drank, it pushed Rivers further away form him. Cuomo didn’t drink until he was 21.
Cuomo’s father began drinking when he was leaving Cuomo’s mother. At 16, Cuomo discovered beer in his refrigerator and realized his stepfather was leaving his mother.
The video was shot at the garage in the Los Angeles where Cuomo and Weezer bass player Matt Sharp lived.
This song was used in the soundtrack of Rock Band. (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Oh yeah.

All right.

Somebody’s Heine’ is crowdin’ my icebox

Somebody’s cold one is givin’ me chills

Guess I’ll just close my eyes

Oh yeah

Alright

Feels good

Inside

Flip on the tele’

Wrestle with Jimmy

Something is bubbling

Behind my back

The bottle is ready to blow

Say it ain’t so

Your drug is a heartbreaker

Say it ain’t so

My love is a lifetaker

I can’t confront you

I never could do

That which might hurt you

So try and be cool

When I say

This way is a waterslide away from me that takes you further every day (hey)

So be cool

Say it ain’t so

Your drug is a heartbreaker

Say it ain’t so

My love is a lifetaker

Dear Daddy,

I write you in spite of years of silence.

You’ve cleaned up, found Jesus,

things are good or so I hear.

This bottle of Steven’s

awakens ancient feelings.

Like father, stepfather, the son is drowning in the flood

Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah.

Say it ain’t so

Your drug is a heartbreaker

Say it ain’t so

My love is a lifetaker

What a Girl Wants - Christina Aguilera

Shelly Peiken and Guy Roche wrote this song, and Roche also produced it. The song finds Aguilera singing the praises of a guy who knows how to treat a lady and stand by her. (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

I wanna thank you for giving me time to breathe

Like a rock you waited so patiently

While I got it together

While I figured it out

I only looked but I never touched

‘Cause in my heart was a picture of us

Holdin’ hands, makin’ plans and it’s lucky for me you understand

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever makes me happy sets you free

And I’m thanking you for knowing exactly

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever keeps me in your arms

And I’m thanking you for being there for me

Yeah Yeah

A weaker man might have walked away

But you had faith

Strong enough to move over and give me space

While I got it together

While I figured it out

They say if you love something let it go

If it comes back it’s yours

That’s how you know

It’s for keeps, yeah, it’s for sure

And you’re ready and willin’

To give me more than

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever makes me happy sets you free

And I’m thanking you for giving it to me

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever keeps me in your arms

And I’m thanking you for being there for me

Yeah Yeah

A girl needs somebody sensitive but tough

Somebody there when the goin’ gets rough

Every night he’ll be giving his love

To just one girl

Somebody cool but real tender too

Somebody, baby, just like you

Can keep me hangin’ around

With the one who always knew

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever makes me happy sets you free

And I’m thanking you for knowing exactly

What a girl wants

What a girl needs

Whatever keeps me in your arms

And I’m thanking you for being there for me

Yeah Yeah

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 342 - A song you would use in a soundtrack as the underdogs theme song

Iridescent - Linkin Park

Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington told MTV News that this mid-tempo ballad is one of his favorite tracks on A Thousand Suns. He said: “I think that ‘Waiting for the End’ and ‘Iridescent’ are probably tied at #1 [for my] favorite song on the record. I just think they’re really beautiful. They’re different. I like the way ‘Iridescent’ builds and climaxes.”
A remixed version of this contemplative ballad featured on the soundtrack of the Michael Bay directed movie, Transformers: Dark Of The Moon and played over the film’s end credits. Speaking to MTV News, Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park said, “We put out the record in the late part of last year and even though it’s never been a single up until this point, [when we played it live] you could really hear the singing pick up momentum during that song. It was just something that seemed a natural fit.”
He added that the hopeful tone of the song appealed to both the band and to Bay. “We loved that part of it when we were in the studio, but Michael actually loved pairing it with the movie because there’s something that he feels it speaks to about the story line.”
This was the third Linkin Park contribution to the Transformers franchise. Their songs “What I’ve Done” and “New Divide” were featured in the first two films. Said Shinoda: “The Transformers collaboration has been really fun for us. I mean, we grew up playing with the toys. When we first got approached on the first one, we said yes based on the idea of taking that thing that we loved so much and bringing it to life in a modern way. As it’s gone on, that’s still a big part of it for us.”
You think the Joe Hahn directed video is kinda confusing? It turns out his Linkin Park bandmates think so too. “All I know about the concept is that Joe Hahn sent me an e-mail that said something about ‘In the valley of the blind, the one-eyed man is king,’ or something like that,” singer/rapper Mike Shinoda laughed to MTV News. “And the next thing I know, I’ve got horns growing out of my shoulders, and I’ve got one blind eye, and I’ve got a white dog and a snake on a throne made of antlers. I think you’d have to ask Joe what that all means.”
“As we’ve gone on, the videos have gotten more abstract,” Shinoda added. “[And] I kind of like that, I’ve been encouraging it with Joe, because … the stuff that goes on in his head is really interesting and really fun, and I think it probably comes from the fact he grew up reading a lot of comics, watching anime, those things. Especially in a video like this, you can tell the influences are there.”
Here’s Joe Hahn’s explanation of the video’s concept in an interview with Noisecreep: “The video explores how human existence might be affected by the elements of Transformers robots and the threat of the Decepticons. What would it be like to be citizens in a decaying universe? I tried a lot of new things here, and we had a lot of fun shooting it.” (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

You were standing in the wake of devastation

And you were waiting on the edge of the unknown

And with the cataclysm raining down

Insides crying “Save me now”

You were there, impossibly alone

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?

You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known

Remember all the sadness and frustration

And let it go. Let it go

And in a burst of light that blinded every angel

As if the sky had blown the heavens into stars

You felt the gravity of tempered grace

Falling into empty space

No one there to catch you in their arms

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?

You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known

Remember all the sadness and frustration

And let it go. Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?

You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known

Remember all the sadness and frustration

And let it go. Let it go

Let it go

Let it go

Let it go

Let it go

Do you feel cold and lost in desperation?

You build up hope, but failure’s all you’ve known

Remember all the sadness and frustration

And let it go. Let it go

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 341 - A song you like from a band that begins with the letter V

Jump - Van Halen

David Lee Roth has given various accounts of the meaning behind the lyrics, but he usually says they are about a TV news story he saw where a man was about to kill himself by jumping off a building (Roth thought, “Might as well jump”). He’s also said the song is about a stripper.
Eddie Van Halen played this on an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer (Oberheim was a large synth manufacturer during the ’80s). He was classically trained on piano growing up, and didn’t start playing guitar until he was a teenager.
The synthesizer was a point of contention in the band. Eddie wanted to use it, but Roth thought it would look like they were selling out to get more radio play. Using a synthesizer instead of a guitar as the lead instrument was a huge departure for Van Halen, but most of their fans didn’t hold it against them.
As early as 1981, Eddie Van Halen had written the keyboard part that would eventually become this song. David Lee Roth didn’t like the idea of Eddie playing keyboards, and it wasn’t until Eddie had built his own recording studio (5150) that he recorded the song with Ted Templeman during a late night recording session. When hearing the song, the band decided to include it on the 1984 album - something that is rumored to have contributed to Roth’s departure a year later.
The video was very low budget but highly successful. It was simply 8 millimeter film footage of the band performing, highlighted by Roth’s slow motion spread-eagle jump. While it looks kind of ridiculous today, the video was groundbreaking and set the standard for cheap performance videos that hapless directors still try to emulate. To produce such a video, the band is filmed performing the song several times from beginning to end. Then, the band members are filmed doing random stage moves without the pretense of actually playing the song (note that Eddie is seen playing the guitar at times when no guitar can be heard). Some candid footage is shot with the band goofing around, and it’s off to the edit room where the footage is chopped up into a video.
While most bands lack the charisma to pull off moves like the “bass player duck under the lead singer’s leg” and “point guitar directly into the camera,” they try lame versions of it anyway, using such tactics as “run to the camera and stop” and “blow a kiss.” In an age when anyone can make a video but most bands lack the money and talent to make a good one, these videos have proliferated, and none has lived up to the standard set by Van Halen with “Jump.” For a good example of a low budget performance video gone horribly wrong, check out this clip from The Forgotten Rebels.
This was Roth’s last album with Van Halen. He was replaced by Sammy Hagar in 1986.
This was the first album recorded at Eddie Van Halen’s 5150 studio. In California, 5150 is police code for a mental case
Eddie used the outro guitar solo at the very end of this song to come up with the idea for the intro guitar riff to Van Halen’s later hit, “Standing On Top (Of The World).”
Although “Jump” is fairly light-hearted for a rock single, in January 2010 a DJ who played it at an “inappropriate time” found himself in hot water. The song was requested by a driver stuck in traffic on the M60, and played by Steve Penk, who came underfire because the delay had been caused by police closing several lanes of the motorway while attempting to talk down a woman who was threatening to jump from a bridge. After nearly nine hours, she leapt, shortly after the song was played. Amazingly she survived, albeit with serious leg injuries.
In an interview with Mix magazine, Daryl Hall said that the Hall & Oates song “Kiss On My List” was an influence on this one. Said Hall: “[Eddie] Van Halen told me that he copied the synth part from ‘Kiss on My List’ and used it in ‘Jump.’ I don’t have a problem with that at all.”(Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

I get up, and nothing gets me down.
You got it tough. I’ve seen the toughest around.
And I know, baby, just how you feel.
You’ve got to roll with the punches to get to what’s real
Oh can’t you see me standing here,
I’ve got my back against the record machine
I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen.
Oh can’t you see what I mean ?
Might as well jump. Jump !
Might as well jump.
Go ahead, jump. Jump !
Go ahead, jump.
Aaa-ohh Hey you ! How said that ?
Baby how you been ?
You say you don’t know, you won’t know until we begin.
Well can’t you see me standing here,
I’ve got my back against the record machine
I ain’t the worst that you’ve seen.
Oh can’t you see what I mean ?
Might as well jump. Jump !
Go ahead, jump.
Might as well jump. Jump !
Go ahead, jump.

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 340 - A song you like that begins with the letter V

Viva Forever - Spice Girls

Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) is featured on the recording and video of this song. It was released in the summer of 1998 after her departure from the group on May 31.
“Hasta mañana” is Spanish for “until tomorrow.” (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Do you still remember, how we used to be

Feeling together, believe in whatever

My love has said to me

Both of us were dreamers

Young love in the sun

Felt like my Saviour, my spirit I gave you

We’d only just begun

Hasta Mañana, Always be mine

Viva forever, I’ll be waiting

Everlasting, like the sun

Live Forever, for the moment

Ever searching for the one

Yes I still remember, every whispered word

The touch of your skin, giving life from within

Like a love song that I’d heard

Slipping through our fingers, like the sands of time

Promises made, every memory saved

Has reflections in my mind

Hasta Mañana, Always be mine

Viva forever, I’ll be waiting

Everlasting, like the sun

Live Forever, for the moment

Ever searching for the one

Back where i belong now, was it just a dream

Feelings unfold, they will never be sold

And the secret’s safe with me

Hasta Mañana, Always be mine

Viva forever, I’ll be waiting

Everlasting, like the sun

Live Forever, for the moment

Ever searching for the one

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 339 - A song you like from a game

Want You Gone

Of course I thought of Still Alive (from Portal), but I had already posted it, so I decided for this song from Portal 2, which is also awesome (song and game! ♥)

Lyrics:

Well, here we are again.

It’s always such a pleasure.

Remember when you tried

to kill me twice?

Oh, how we laughed and laughed.

Except I wasn’t laughing.

Under the circumstances,

I’ve been shockingly nice.

You want your freedom?

Take it.

That’s what I’m counting on.

I used to want you dead,

But

now, I only want you gone.

She was a lot like you,

(Maybe not quite as heavy)

Now little Caroline is in here too.

One day they woke me up,

So I could Live forever.

It’s such a shame the same

Will never happen to you.

You’ve got your

Short sad

Life left

That’s what I’m counting on.

I’ll let you get right to it.

Now, I only want you gone.

Goodbye my only friend.

Oh, did you think I meant you?

That would be funny

If it weren’t so sad.

Well, you have been replaced.

I don’t need anyone now.

When I delete you maybe

I’ll stop feeling so bad.

Go make some new disaster.

That’s what I’m counting on.

You’re someone else’s problem

Now, I only want you gone.

Now, I only want you gone.

Now, I only want you gone.

Gone.

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 338 - A song from the 00’s that you think should be sampled or covered

Hey Ya - OutKast

Again, not a fan of covers, but a sample could be interesting!

This is a very upbeat and energetic song, but according to Andre 3000, it is about the difficulty in keeping a relationship together. The album is mostly about the quest for love.
Andre wrote the first version of the song around 1999, and it almost made it onto their 2000 album Stankonia. At the time the song was called “Thank God For Mom And Dad.” He started working on it again in 2002, doing lots of experimentation along the way. A lot of lyrics he wrote for the song didn’t make the cut.
Aaron Mills from the Funk band Cameo was brought in to play bass, but Andre played all the other instruments. The guitar chords were the first ones he learned.
Andre is the only male voice on the song. He did each line over and over, and by the time it was edited together, it sounded like other people were singing with him.
The girls who respond to Andre when he says, “Hey Ladies…” are actually just one person. A woman working in the studio was recorded saying “Yeah,” and her voice was layered to sound like many.
This was finished just in time to be released as the first single from the album. They were going to put out “She Lives In My Lap” when Andre called the record company and told them this was finished and should be released first.
The video was inspired by The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The Beatles came to America and created a frenzy. During the show, the audience was filled with screaming girls who went crazy for the group. For the Outkast video, they made it as if an American band invaded England, played a TV show there, and created the same type of frenzy.
In the video, 8 band members were played by Andre 3000, including the backup singers known as The Love Haters. Andre had to play the song through as each character 3 times so they could shoot it from different angles, and was exhausted by the end. About 100 girls were brought in as extras to play the screaming fans.
The announcer at the beginning of the video is Ryan Phillippe, who has appeared in the movies Cruel Intentions and White Squall. He was married to actress Reece Witherspoon.
Polaroid pictures are instant photos taken with special cameras that spit out the picture right from the camera after it is snapped. You’re not supposed to shake the picture, but most people did anyway because they thought it would help it develop. Andre 3000 found a new expression for dancing when he said: “Shake it like a Polaroid picture.” He also helped sell a lot more Polaroid cameras, which had been mostly forgotten since digital cameras became popular. In the video, the girls shake Polaroid pictures.
In the first year Apple’s iTunes music store was online, this was the most-downloaded song. It was the first song in history to rack up 1 million downloads, making it the first song to achieve Platinum status as a download.
Andre 3000 told the Mail on Sunday October 19, 2008 that people are always commenting on the green tartan trousers that he wore in the song’s music video. He explained: “I designed those before I had my own label - Benjamin Bixby - using fabric I found in my hometown. I got a seamstress to sew them up for me, and then the year the single came out I started to see more and more green in people’s collections. I don’t know if there’s such a thing as a royal green, but that’s what I like to call it.” (Songfacts.com)

(Shake it Suga’) shake it like a Poloroid Picture

[Verse Three - Andre 3000 (Repeating “Shake it” in background)]
Now while Beyonce’s and Lucy Lui’s
And baby dolls, get on the floor
(Get on the floor)
You know what to dooo..
You know what to dooo..
You know what to do!

[Chorus]
Heeeyyy… Yaaaaaaa.. (OHH OH)
Heeyy Yaaaaaaaa.. (OHH OH)
Heeeyyy… Yaaaaaaa.. (OHH OH)
Heeyy Yaaaaaaaa.. (Uh oh, Hey Ya)
Heeeyyy… Yaaaaaaa.. (OHH OH)

[Chorus continues until fade]
