Day 263 - A song that reminds you of the color yellow

Yellow Submarine - The Beatles


Paul McCartney wrote this one. He explained shortly after it was released in 1966: “‘Yellow Submarine’ is very simple but very different. It’s a fun song, a children’s song. Originally we intended it to be ‘Sparky’ a children’s record. But now it’s the idea of a yellow submarine where all the kids went to have fun. I was just going to sleep one night and thinking if we had a children’s song, it would be nice to be on a yellow submarine where all your friends are with a band.”
Paul purposely used short words in the lyrics because he wanted kids to pick it up early and sing along.
Ringo sang lead, as he did on many of the lighter Beatles songs, including “Octopus’s Garden” and “Act Naturally.” Originally, Ringo had a spoken intro to go with the children’s story theme, but this was discarded. Ringo did eventually get his chance to narrate for children: he was voice talent on the UK cartoon Thomas The Tank Engine.
As with just about every Beatles song, there’s a lot that can be read into this one if you look hard enough. One possible interpretation: Once famous, The Beatles were forced to stay in hotel rooms and live under pressure = Submarine. Because they were having a great time it was Yellow (friends are all aboard). Sea of green = money. 
The sounds of bubbles, water, and other noises were recorded in the studio. The background vocals (and some effects) were done by John, Paul, and George and they had some help on the fadeout chorus by Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, George Martin, Alf Bicknell (their chauffeur), Geoff Emerick, Brian Jones, Marianne Faithful, Pattie Harrison and a few other staff people that were in the building at the time. The “bubble” effects are John blowing into a straw. All of the speaking parts are done by John and Paul.
Some people felt this song had deeper meaning about drugs or war. The Beatles said it did not, but they were used to people reading too much into their songs. OnThe White Album, there is a song called “Glass Onion” that addresses this issue.
The chorus at the end consists of the studio crew, as well as their friends Mal Evans and Neil Aspinall, producer George Martin, and Pattie Harrison. The famous Folk singer Donovan, who was McCartney’s friend and neighbor at the time, helped him with uncredited lyrical contributions on this song. He likely also recorded backing vocals in the chorus.
According to Steve Turner’s book A Hard Day’s Write, about a month after the album was released, there were barbiturate capsules that started to be known as “yellow submarines.” McCartney denied any comparison to drugs and said the only submarine he knew that you could eat was a sugary sweet he’s come across in Greece while on holiday. These had to be dropped in water and were known as “submarines.” 
This was the title song from an animated movie featuring The Beatles as cartoons. The Beatles had a lot going on at the time, so actors were brought in to voice their lines. In the film, The Beatles try to save Pepperland from the Blue Meanies, who hate music. We won’t spoil it by telling you how it ends.
The photographic scenes shown in the movie Yellow Submarine are of well-known locations in England, including Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. 
After he got the idea for the song, McCartney dropped by Donovan’s place and asked him for suggestions to close the tune. Donovan came up with “Sky of blue, sea of green.” Donovan went with The Beatles on their retreat to India in 1968.
This was used as the B-side of “Eleanor Rigby.”
In 2004, McCartney voiced over 3 animated short films for a project called The Music And Animation Collection. He explained that it was much more fun voicing other characters, and he had no interest in using his own voice on the Yellow Submarine movie.
Spanish premier division soccer team Villareal is nicknamed “Los Submarinos Amarillos” (Spanish for “Yellow Submarine”) because of their yellow uniforms.
According to Q magazine, this song originally featured a medieval-style poem as an intro. Written by Lennon and narrated by Starr, the poem was inspired by a 1960 charity walk from the south west tip of England to the northern coast of Scotland by pioneering health enthusiast Dr. Barbara Moore. (Songfacts.com)

Symphony No. 5 - Beethoven


The Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, was written by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1804–1808. It Is one of the most popular and best-known compositions in classical music, and one of the most often played symphonies. It comprises four movements: an opening sonata, an andante, and a fast scherzo which leads attacca to the finale. First performed in Vienna’s Theater an der Wienin 1808, the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterwards. E. T. A. Hoffmann described the symphony as “one of the most important works of the time”.

It begins by stating a distinctive four-note “short-short-short-long” motif twice. The symphony, and the four-note opening motif in particular, are well known worldwide, with the motif appearing frequently inpopular culture, from disco to rock and roll, to appearances in film and television. 

It appears in Disney’s Fantasia 2000 where abstract patterns and shapes resembling butterflies and bats explore a world of light and darkness which is ultimately conquered by light.(Wiki)

Lose Yourself - Eminem


This was featured in Eminem’s first movie, 8 Mile. The movie is based on Eminem’s life; he grew up in a poor Detroit neighborhood and followed his dream of rap stardom. The movie got very good reviews as Eminem turned out to be a surprisingly good actor.
On the movie set, Eminem had a trailer where he could record songs for the movie during breaks in filming. He wrote this in character as B. Rabbit, who he played in 8 Mile. Writing in character was nothing new for Eminem, as he had previously written songs as his alter ego, Slim Shady.
The track had been around for over a year before Eminem pulled it off a CD and decided to work off the beat. He had his musicians mold the beat around his vocals.
This song is highly produced and heavily layered. In addition to several vocal tracks, there are horns, woodwinds, strings, keyboards, drums, and sound effects all over the track.
When the movie studio released the first trailers, this song did not exist, so they used “Cleanin’ Out My Closet,” which the studio wanted to feature in the movie. Eminem thought that song was too personal for the movie, which was one reason he was so determined to write something that fit the character.
The 8 Mile soundtrack was part of a very successful run for Eminem. While overall album sales were declining due to high CD prices and Internet piracy, this soundtrack and Eminem’s album The Eminem Show were selling millions of copies. Rapper 50 Cent, who also appeared on the soundtrack, was the next big music success story. He also sold millions of albums after signing a deal with Eminem and Dr. Dre’s Shady/Aftermath Records and releasing Get Rich or Die Tryin’.
Eminem performed this at the 2003 Grammy Awards with The Roots backing him up. He won the Best Rap Album award that year for The Eminem Show. It was the only rap or R&B award presented during the telecast, as the other awards in those categories were given out before they went on the air. This didn’t go over well in the rap community, especially since the award for Best Comedy Album (won by Robin Williams) was given out during the show.
This won an Oscar for Best Song From A Movie, beating out songs by Paul Simon and U2. It was a bold choice for the academy, who usually pick fairly tame songs by Randy Newman, Sting, or Elton John. Barbra Streisand announced the award, and seemed surprised and happy that Eminem won.
Eminem did not perform at the Oscars because they wanted him to sing the “radio friendly” version and he wanted to sing the song as written and let the censors edit the language. This was the first winning song not performed on The Oscars since it has been televised. 
Unlike most rap songs, this uses a guitar playing power chords.
The line, “Best believe somebody’s paying the pied piper” is a reference to traditional German story The Pied Piper of Hamelin. The piper was hired to help the village with their rat problem. When they didn’t pay, he left with the town’s children.
This won a Grammy for Best Rap Song of 2003. (Songfacts.com)

The Sherman Brothers wrote this for the Disney movie Mary Poppins. Robert Sherman Jr. explains:
“Many people comment that this song is just a tongue twister and that there’s nothing more to it. Actually, this song is integral to the plot of the Mary Poppins motion picture. When Mary, Bert and the children escape into the magic world of Bert’s street pavement pastel drawing, the foursome shares a “supernatural” adventure. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (L’apprenti sorcier) is a symphonic poem by the French composer Paul Dukas, written in 1896-97.
