Song: Changes

Artist: Will Young

This was written by Young, together with his frequent collaborator Eg White. Among White’s other songwriting credits are Will Young’s Ivor Novello Award winning “Leave Right Now” and James Morrison’s UK Top 10 hit, “You Give Me Something.”
Will Young said on his record label’s website: “Eg really brings the best out of me. Writing with him is like having a very frank conversation, straight to the heart. This is one of my most personal songs. I was in a bit of a rut and I didn’t even know it. Writing about the changes I needed to make actually helped me get out a situation where I felt trapped by my own actions. That really is songwriting as therapy!” (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Gotta shake myself up here

I should run away, run away, run away

People say dont even go near

I can see the danger, Im aware, I see the danger

If I go back once again its like I learned nothing

Standing at the front of a queue

Heading for trouble

Hope it changes

Hope my life changes

Gets alright somehow

Oh Im waiting for tomorrow

I hope it changes

Cant you stay the same

Been out of luck for so long

And I dont get much so theres nothing much to lose

Its like a record going round

Yes its going round, going round, going round

I know I should wanna take it off

But I find it hard, why do I find it hard?

I used to have a vision

I was sitting somewhere up there

Looking down on myself

Doing right for once in my life

It changes

Hope my life changes

Gets alright somehow

Oh Im waiting for tomorrow

I hope it changes

Cant you stay the same

Been out of luck for so long

And I dont get much

So theres nothing much to lose

I just need a break

A little one

To get me up to watch the sun

And hey its peaceful here

Hope it changes

Hope my life changes

Gets alright somehow

Oh Im waiting for tomorrow

Hope it changes

Cant you stay the same (cant you stay the same)

Been out of luck for so long (cant you stay the same)

Dont get much so theres nothing much to lose

Changes

Oh Im waiting for tomorrow

Hope it changes

Cant you stay the same

Been out of luck for so long

  • Lá Vem O Alemãofrom “Mamonas Assassinas”by Mamonas Assassinas

iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: Lá Vem o Alemão

Artist: Mamonas Assassinas

A song from the brazilian band Mamonas Assassinas (already mentioned here), that is a satyrised pop-samba music (pagode), about a poor man whose girl left him for an alemão (“German”, a slang term for white, wealthy people). The title also parodies the song “Lá Vem o Negão” (Here Comes the Black Guy) from samba group Cravo e Canella, which was a hit just two years before the album’s release. The song also features well-known pagode musicians doing additional instrumental work: Fabinho from Negritude Júnior and Leandro Lehart from Art Popular. (Wiki)

Lyrics:

Subiu a Serra me deixou no Boqueirão

me dá vontade de bater, te espancar

ó meu amor

Só porque ele é lindo, loiro e forte

tem dinheiro e um Escort

como modess você me trocou

Subiu a Serra me deixou no Boqueirão

arrombou meu coração depois desapareceu

fiquei na merda nas areias do destino

me tratou como um suíno

cuspiu no prato que comeu.(2x)

subiu sim, subiu sim, subiu

geladinho gostozinho vai uuuuuuuuu

eu disse sim,eu disse sim

eu fiquei voce subiu

Song: I Wanna Be Sedated

Artist: Ramones

Joey Ramone came up with the idea for this song after he burned himself with hot water and had to be treated at a hospital. Ramone would inhale steam from a kettle before concerts to help clear his nasal passages.
The chorus, where Ramone sings about “Nothing to do” and “Nowhere to go,” was inspired by their 1977-78 tour when they ended up in London around Christmas. It was their first time in the city, but it was pretty much shut down. Joey and Dee Dee stayed in their hotel and watched movies.
For Johnny Ramones guitar solo, he plays the same note 65 times in a row. Very Punk. (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go I wanna be sedated

Nothin’ to do and no where to go-o-oh I wanna be sedated

Just get me to the airport put me on a plane

Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane

I can’t control my fingers I can’t control my brain

Oh no no no no no

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go….

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me on a plane

Hurry hurry hurry before I go insane

I can’t control my fingers I can’t control my brain

Oh no no no no no

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go I wanna be sedated

Nothin’ to do and no where to go-o-o I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair get me to the show

Hurry hurry hurry before I go loco

I can’t control my fingers I can’t control my toes

Oh no no no no no

Twenty-twenty-twenty four hours to go…

Just put me in a wheelchair…

Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated

Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated

Ba-ba-bamp-ba ba-ba-ba-bamp-ba I wanna be sedated

Song: Because You Loved Me

Artist: Celine Dion

The song was written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster for the movie Up Close & Personal. It was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award and won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.
Diane Warren explained in the book Chicken Soup For the Soul: The Story Behind The Song how she honors her father in this song. Said Warren: “I saw the film with the director, Jon Avnet, on a Friday. I thought, ‘What would I want to hear at the end of the movie?’ Jon played me a tape of a gospel singer to give me a sense of what he was looking for – something really soulful.
I went into my office on Saturday, the following day, and the chorus came quickly. Michelle Pfeiffer’s character is thanking Robert Redford’s character for believing in her. The song became personal at the same time that it was telling the story of the film. Once I began, it became a way of thanking my dad for everything he did for me and the support he has always given me. He believed in me and my music from the time I was a little girl. When I was 15, he took me around to music publishers. Not only did he support my goals, he supported me financially while I was struggling in the beginning.
I had to wait for months to see if my song would be chosen to use in the film or if they would select one of the other four submissions. Thank goodness I had just started therapy! It got me through it.”
The song was an international hit spending six weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It also topped the charts in Australia (3 weeks) and Canada (1 week). The single also set a then record on the US Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks, where it remained at #1 for 19 weeks. Warren commented in The Story Behind The Song: “This was the song that brought me to another level. The song was better than I was at the time.”
The track has been covered by various artists (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

For all those times you stood by me

For all the truth that you made me see

For all the joy you brought to my life

For all the wrong that you made right

For every dream you made come true

For all the love I found in you

I’ll be forever thankful baby

You’re the one who held me up

Never let me fall

You’re the one who saw me through through it all

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ‘coz you believed

I’m everything I am

Because you loved me

You gave me wings and made me fly

You touched my hand I could touch the sky

I lost my faith, you gave it back to me

You said no star was out of reach

You stood by me and I stood tall

I had your love I had it all

I’m grateful for each day you gave me

Maybe I don’t know that much

But I know this much is true

I was blessed because I was loved by you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ‘coz you believed

I’m everything I am

Because you loved me

You were always there for me

The tender wind that carried me

A light in the dark shining your love into my life

You’ve been my inspiration

Through the lies you were the truth

My world is a better place because of you

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ‘coz you believed

I’m everything I am

Because you loved me

You were my strength when I was weak

You were my voice when I couldn’t speak

You were my eyes when I couldn’t see

You saw the best there was in me

Lifted me up when I couldn’t reach

You gave me faith ‘coz you believed

I’m everything I am

Because you loved me

I’m everything I am

Because you loved me

  • The Spirit Of Radiofrom “Permanent Waves”by Rush

iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: The Spirit of Radio

Artist: Rush

Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart explained this song in an interview with Billboard magazine:
“The Spirit of Radio was actually written as a tribute to all that was good about radio, celebrating my appreciation of magical moments I’d had since childhood, of hearing ‘the right song at the right time.’ However, [the song’s] celebration of the ideals of radio necessarily seemed like an attack on the reality - on the formulaic, mercenary programming of most radio stations, with music the last of anyone’s concerns. And yes, it was really ironic that such a song became popular on radio, though it was a kind of litmus test. Some radio guys who ‘got it’ could hear the song and think, ‘That’s the way it ought to be,’ while others - the shallow, swaggering salesmen-of-the-air - could be oblivious to the song’s meaning and proudly applaud themselves, ‘That’s about me!’”

The unusual guitar sound heard in this song is achieved by Alex Lifeson playing on the neck of his instrument, and playing very quickly.

In the last verse, the line “The words of the profits are written on the studio wall” is a play on words. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart wrote it as “profits” rather than “prophets” to expose the money-grubbing side of the music industry. The lyrics were included in the album and the CD. (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Begin the day with a friendly voice

A companion unobtrusive

Plays that song that’s so elusive

And the magic music makes your morning mood

Off on your way, hit the open road

There is magic at your fingers

For the Spirit ever lingers

Undemanding contact in your happy solitude

[Chorus:]

Invisible airwaves crackle with life

Bright antennae bristle with the energy

Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength

Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free

All this machinery making modern music

Can still be open hearted

Not so coldly charted

It’s really just a question of your honesty, yeah

Your honesty

One likes to believe in the freedom of music

But glittering prizes and endless compromises

Shatter the illusion of integrity

[Chorus]

For the words of the prophets were written on the studio wall

Concert hall

And echoes with the sounds of salesmen

Song: You’re Beautiful

Artist: James Blunt

Blunt said on VH1’s The Vspot that he wrote this song about seeing his ex-girlfriend with a new man who he didn’t know about on a train in the London underground. He says that they shared a lifetime in the brief eye contact. The words came to him all at once.

In a February edition of Radio Times, James Blunt responded to a question about the girl he sings about: “The girl in question is my ex-girlfriend and she’s with her new man. I’ve always said that I haven’t seen her since and then the press tried to find her. I’m not bothered enough to start acknowledging or denying whether they found her.”

In the video, Blunt jumps into the sea without a shirt. This can be seen as a suicide, as it goes with the last lines of the song, “But it’s time to face the truth. I will never be with you.”

In the radio edit, the line “I was f—king high” is replaced with “I was flying high.”

Blunt’s birth name is James Blount, he changed it because he didn’t want to spell it out for people all the time.

The Daily Record March 22, 2008 asked Blunt if he was bored with this monster hit. The singer-songwriter replied: “If I had the radio on all the time and they kept playing that song then yes, I’d probably turn it off. But do I still like the song? Absolutely. It’s a really personal song about a moment which meant a great deal to me. And I’m sure plenty of guys have seen their ex-girlfriend with a new man at some stage. It bites into you and I captured that in a really honest song. I love that song for capturing that moment. I’m saddened by what it reminds me of, and I appreciate what it did which is advertise an album I’d made.”

British Songwriter and producer Sasha Skarbek had been helping James Blunt develop his song craft for a while when the pair sat a piano one day in LA. During that session they developed this tune from a basic sketch into a complete song in just three hours. “It’s strange that the songs you become known for tend to be the ones that come so quickly that you almost question it,” Skarbek reflected to Q magazine June 2012.(Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

My life is brilliant.

My life is brilliant.

My love is pure.

I saw an angel.

Of that I’m sure.

She smiled at me on the subway.

She was with another man.

But I won’t lose no sleep on that,

‘Cause I’ve got a plan.

You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.

You’re beautiful, it’s true.

I saw your face in a crowded place,

And I don’t know what to do,

‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,

As I walked on by,

She could see from my face that I was,

Fucking high,

And I don’t think that I’ll see her again,

But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.

You’re beautiful, it’s true.

I saw your face in a crowded place,

And I don’t know what to do,

‘Cause I’ll never be with you.

You’re beautiful. You’re beautiful.

You’re beautiful, it’s true.

There must be an angel with a smile on her face,

When she thought up that I should be with you.

But it’s time to face the truth,

I will never be with you.

iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: Ain’t That A Shame

Artist: John Lennon

This was the first song that John Lennon learned to play. Lennon later recorded the song in a duet with Yoko Ono, and his fellow Beatle Paul McCartney also recorded the song.

Originally by Fats Domino, this is a heartache song about a breakup that was the other partner’s fault. Domino wrote it with Dave Bartholomew, who worked on most of Domino’s hits.(Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

You made me cry

When you said goodbye

Ain’t that a shame?

My tears fell like rain

Ain’t that a shame?

You’re the one to blame

You broke my heart

when you said we’re part

Ain’t that a shame?

My tears fell like rain

Ain’t that a shame?

You’re the one to blame

Boogie, babe!

Ain’t that a shame?

Ain’t that a shame?

Look out!

Farewell, goodbye, although I ‘ll cry

Ain’t that a shame?

My tears fell like rain

Ain’t that a shame?

You’re the one to blame

Boggie, babe!

Ain’t that a shame?

Ain’t that a shame?

You made me cry

When you said goodbye

Ain’t that a shame?

My tears fell like rain

Ain’t that a shame?

You’re the one to blame

  • Une Femme Amoureusefrom “Talina et Soumia's Unknown Album”by Talina et Soumia

iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: Une Femme Amoureuse

Artist: Talina et Soumia

A french version of the original Woman in Love composed by the Bee Gees and sang by Barbra Streisand.

Lyrics:

Le temps qui court comme un fou

Aujourd’hui voilà qu’il s’arrête sur nous

Tu me regardes et qui sait si tu me vois

Mais moi je ne vois que toi

Je n’ai plus qu’une question

Tes yeux mes yeux

Et je chante ton nom

Si quelqu’un d’autre venait

Je l’éloignerais et je me défendrais

{Refrain:}

Je suis une femme amoureuse

Et je brûle d’envie de dresser autour de toi

Les murs de ma vie

C’est mon droit de t’aimer

Et de vouloir te garder

Par dessus tout

Hier aujourd’hui demain

Comptent un seul jour quand tu prends ma main

C’est comme un plan fabuleux tracé là-haut

Pour l’amour de nous deux

Qu’on soit ensemble longtemps

Ou séparés par des océans

Si un danger survenait

Je l’éloignerais et je me défendrais

{au Refrain}

  • Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koofrom “All American Boy”by Rick Derringer

iTunes Pick of the Day

Song: Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo

Artist: Rick Derringer

This was first released on the Johnny Winter And LP (1970), with Derringer and the McCoys (#1 “Hang On Sloopy”) backing up Winter. Derringer decided to re-record it for his first solo single.
“Hoochie Koo” is short for “Hoochie Koochie,” which is sexual slang popularized by Muddy Waters in his song “Hoochie Coochie Man.” (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Couldn`t stop moving
When it first took hold
It was a warm spring night
At the old town hall

There was a group called The Jokers
They were laying it down
Don`tcha know I`m never
Gonna lose that funky sound

(CHORUS)
Rock and roll hoochie koo
(Rock and roll hoochie koo)
Lawdy mama, light my fuse
(Light my fuse)
Rock and roll hoochie koo
(Rock and roll hoochie koo)
Truck on out and spread the news

Squitas start buzzing
Bout this time of year
I`m going round back
Said she`d meet me there

We was rolling in the grass
Growing behind the barn
When my ears started ringing
Like a fire alarm

(CHORUS)

Yeah, did somebody say
Keep on rockin, owww

I hope you all know
What I`m talkin about
The way you wiggle that thing
Really knocks me out

Getting high all the time
Hope you all are too
Come on a little closer
Gonna do it to you

(CHORUS) 2X

(Rock and roll hoochie koo)
Done got tired of paying dues
(Rock and roll hoochie koo)
Said goodbye to all my blues
(Rock and roll hoochie koo)
Lawdy mama, light my fuse

365 Day Song Challenge

Day 346 - The song you think you have played over and over and over the most in your life

Tears in Heaven - Eric Claptonp

Can it be played… in the guitar? =D

Clapton wrote this about his 4-year-old son Conor, who died when he fell out of a 53rd floor window in the apartment where his mother was staying in New York City. Clapton had one other child at the time: His daughter Ruth was born in 1987, the year after Conor was born.
Clapton wrote this with Will Jennings, who has written many famous songs from movies, including “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer And A Gentleman and “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic. Jennings wrote the lyrics to many of Steve Winwood’s hits and has also written with B.B. King, Roy Orbison, The Crusaders, Peter Wolf and many others. He told us:
“Eric and I were engaged to write a song for a movie called Rush. We wrote a song called ‘Help Me Up’ for the end of the movie… then Eric saw another place in the movie for a song and he said to me, ‘I want to write a song about my boy.’ Eric had the first verse of the song written, which, to me, is all the song, but he wanted me to write the rest of the verse lines and the release (‘Time can bring you down, time can bend your knees…’), even though I told him that it was so personal he should write everything himself. He told me that he had admired the work I did with Steve Winwood and finally there was nothing else but do to as he requested, despite the sensitivity of the subject. This is a song so personal and so sad that it is unique in my experience of writing songs.”
Clapton knew of Jennings from his work with Steve Winwood. Says Jennings: “Eric and Steve go back, they made that one record together years ago (with Blind Faith), and Eric followed all our writing from Arc Of A Diver, because he always kept up with Steve. We wrote an album called Talking Back To The Night that Steve and I did, and then the third album we wrote was the Back In The High Life album. So Eric knew about that, and he knew about the Crusaders things and the B.B. King things. He had said he always wanted to get together and write, so he called me for the film. Russ Titelman, who had produced the Back In The High Life album, was involved in the film, and that was the other connection.”
Jennings revised the lyrics as Clapton and his band worked on it in the studio. They had no idea it would be a huge hit. Says Jennings, “It was furthest through from my mind, really. I was so involved in the sensitivity of the subject, and I didn’t even think about that. I’m passionate about all the songs I write, but it was just in another place entirely, another category.”
Conor’s mother is actress Lory Del Santo. She and Clapton began dating while he was going through a divorce with his wife Pattie.
After Conor’s death, Clapton appeared in Public Service Announcements urging parents to put up gates to keep their children away from danger.
This won Grammys in 1993 for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal. Clapton was nominated for 9 Grammys that year and won 6.
Clapton played an acoustic version on his 1992 MTV Unplugged special. The performance was made into a very successful album, featuring acoustic versions of “Layla” and “Before You Accuse Me.” The acoustic version was used a the B-side of the acoustic “Layla” single in 1992.
Clapton’s 1986 album August is named for the month Conor was born.
In March 2004, Eric stopped playing this and “My Father’s Eyes” in concert. While touring Japan in November and December 2003, he discovered he could no longer perform them. Said Clapton: “I didn’t feel the loss anymore, which is so much a part of performing those songs. I really have to connect with he feelings that were there when I wrote them. They’re kind of gone and I really don’t want them to come back, particularly. My life is different now. They probably just need a rest and maybe I’ll introduce them for a much more detached point of view.”  (Songfacts.com)

Lyrics:

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I’ll find my way
Through night and day,
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There’s peace I’m sure,
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven.
